HighSchoolHoop.com has it first - Word of God Academy (N.C.) forward Stephon Drane ended his recruitment Wednesday afternoon, picking Western Kentucky over heavy interest from Virginia, George Mason, South Carolina and Missouri State.
”I just felt really comfortable down there when I visited three weeks ago,” says Drane, a 6-8 rising senior. ”I just liked everything about the school, and when I committed today they were real excited. They said I could consider myself part of the family.”
The commitment was a steal for Western Kentucky since Drane’s stock has steadily been on the rise this AAU season. It’s eerily similar to his Word of God teammate C.J. Leslie’s ascension from ”player to watch” to ”No. 12 overall prospect in the HighSchoolHoop top 50.
But when Leslie reached star status he backed out of his commitment to North Carolina State to make room for bigger schools. ”I’ve definitely seen things pick up for me lately,” says Drane. ”When C.J. de-committed he was younger and he wanted to see what was out there. But I’m firm to Western Kentucky. That’s where I want to be. It’s the best situation for me.”
From espn.com === December, 2008: Stephon comes off the bench for Word of God and was very impressive with his defensive presence (GlaxoSmithKline Tournament). He is 6'9 with a long wingspan. He plays above the rim and is a run and jump athlete. Drane would be excellent at the front of the press. The high-major pressing teams need to get all over him. What stood out the most was he was in a stance at all times at 6'9. He competes at a high-major level defensively. He got a lot of minutes the game I saw because N.C. State-bound C.J. Leslie got in early foul trouble. Stephon can play for a lot of people at the high-major level because his athleticism and length. He can guard any position on the court, 1 through 5. This player is a high-major sleeper.
WOW 6'9! That's looking good for WKU!
