Coach David Elson Just announced WKU football agreement with the University of Kentucky for a 4 game series in football beginning in 2010!
Western Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky have agreed to an unprecedented four-year football series, both universities jointly announced Wednesday. The schools will meet in Lexington in 2010 and 2012 and at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., in 2011 and 2013. The games in the Music City are designated as home games for the Hilltoppers.
While the schools have met five times in basketball (UK leads 3-2), their only meeting on the gridiron was Kentucky’s 41-3 win on September 27, 2008 at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington last season. The Hilltopper basketball team picked up a 64-52 win over the Wildcats on Nov. 15, 2001 at Rupp Arena in the school’s last basketball match up.
WKU, the newest of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision Members, is eligible for a post-season bowl berth and the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2009. WKU’s 511-337-30 all-time record in 90 seasons of football equates to a .600 winning percentage, ranking 26th among all 120 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools and tops in the Sun Belt Conference. WKU’s 948 APR in football is also higher than all other Sun Belt Conference programs.
Under head coach Rich Brooks, Kentucky has won postseason games in three consecutive seasons for the first time in school history with bowl wins over Clemson (2006 Music City Bowl), Florida State (2007 Music City Bowl) and East Carolina (2008 Liberty Bowl). The Wildcats enter the 2009 season with 14 consecutive non-conference wins, the second-longest active streak in the country.
Ticket information will be available in the coming months and tickets will go on-sale in 2010.

WKU Football Opener At Tennessee Marks Debut of SEC Network Western Kentucky University’s 2009 season opening game at Tennessee on September 5 will kick off at 11:21 central time and marks the debut of the SEC Network on ESPN Regional Television. The regionally syndicated game will air in more than 73 television markets, and WBKO-TV will televise the game for the Bowling Green area. “This is a special year for us, and it is great that our season opener will be able to be seen by almost half of the country,” Head Coach David Elson said. “It will be a tremendous challenge in a hostile environment, but our guys are excited about it. This is why you play the game. We have played at Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Virginia Tech in recent years, so we will be ready.” Longtime SEC announcer Dave Neal will call the game, along with analyst Andre Ware and reporter Cara Capuano. The SEC Studio show will begin coverage at 11:00 a.m. with host Rob Stone and analyst Matt Stinchcomb in the studio. The markets that will air the package represent more than 54 million television households, or 47 percent of the U.S. WKU, the newest of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision Members, is eligible for a post-season bowl berth and the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2009. Sorry, but I tailgate at every KU home game (well, I actually go to a specific tailgate rather than have my own, but hey, it's tailgating I guess). I didn't even know WKU had a football team until last year.

Oh yeah! They have a great tradition! 511 all-time wins, more than all Sun Belt members and 26th out of 120 FBS schools. Enter 91st season of football in 2009: rich history includes 64 All-Americans, 12 conference championships, and 10 playoff appearances including 2002 I-AA National Championship. You would be shocked to see some of the players who went and played at WKU to go on and play for the Pros! www.wkusports.com/fls/5400/wku_site/pdf/2008wkuinthepros.pdf

Brandon Smith named WKU starting QBWestern Kentucky coach David Elson told reporters after practice today that the staff has decided to name fifth-year senior Brandon Smith as the team’s starting quarterback for the 2009 season. Smith beat out redshirt freshmen Kawaun Jakes and Marcus Vasquez – along with sophomore Tyler Bruce – for the starting spot and will get the call when WKU takes the field at Tennessee on Sept. 5. The decision ends several months of speculation as to which player will lead the WKU offense this year. As early as late last week, Elson said the position battle was still very much up in the air – but over the past few days, Elson said Smith has shown what it takes on the field and off to be the team’s starter. bgdnwkublog.wordpress.com/
