THE NCAA AGAIN!!!!MTSU men's basketball hit with NCAA secondary violationsMTSU men’s basketball committed three NCAA secondary violations over a two-year period. The violations were reported to the NCAA by “an anonymous tip” late in the 2008-09 basketball season, according to MTSU athletic director Chris Massaro, who said he was unaware of any violations until contacted by the NCAA. “We are never happy to report secondary violations, but during the course of the school year they will undoubtedly occur,” Massaro said. “When mistakes are made, we will report them, learn from them, and do our best to not repeat the violations.” Added MTSU men’s basketball coach Kermit Davis: “We are always very concerned with any type of infraction, although minor and secondary in nature. Our staff had no intent to violate any secondary rule, but will absolutely learn and be better because of this process.” The NCAA does not comment or release information about secondary infractions, according to NCAA associate director of public and media relations Jennifer Kearns. MTSU volunteered its copy of the NCAA report to The Daily News Journal. MTSU penalty is self-imposed. The basketball program will reduce its practice time by 880 minutes (14 hours, 40 minutes) this season. A summary of the three violations from the NCAA report follow: (1) “During the summer of 2007 and 2008, men’s basketball student-athletes participated in impermissable countable athletically-related activities inasmuch as the team’s summer strength and conditioning program and some of the pick-up basketball activities were not voluntary and the director of men’s basketball operations required two student-athletes to perform athletically-related activities as punishments during the summer.” (2) “For approximately two weeks during October 2008, the director of men’s basketball operations had student managers chart the rebounding totals of men’s basketball student-athletes during pick-up basketball games and return the statistics to his attention.” (3) “During the 2008 fall semester, the institution provided an official visit to a prospective men’s basketball student-athlete that exceeded 48 hours. Specifically, an assistant men’s basketball coach picked up (prospect) at 9 a.m. on Sept. 25, 2008, to begin the visit. The coach transported (prospect) to campus for official visit and did not terminate contact with (prospect) until 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2008, after returning (prospect) to his home (53 hours and 30 minutes after the beginning of the 48-hour period for the official visit)." www.dnj.com/article/20090821/BLUERAIDERS02/90821014/MTSU-men-s-basketball-hit-with-NCAA-secondary-violations&referrer=FRONTPAGECAROUSELOK!!!! These rules are becoming a little ridiculous. The coaches punished the players by making them do athletic related activities? ?? HOW DARE THEM!
