content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2010/01/la-papers-pete-carroll-has-resigned-as-usc-coach-poised-to-join-seahawks/1I know this is old news but I was out of town in the snow when it happened... Who would have thought this would happen? I never saw this coming. For those of you who remembered my Pre-season Pac-10 talk, I said there would be no coaching changes unless Jim Harbaugh goes to the NFL because of a successful season at Stanford. Why does Carroll leave? Here are some logical reasons: 1. Avoiding USC Scandal and possible penalties to comeMost likely with the Reggie Bush, Joe McKnight and even OJ Mayo stuff going on at USC, there most likely will be sanctions put on their program and Carroll wants to avoid this. The Basketball team doesn't play a meaningful game until another 9 months... will the football team be hit somewhere too? 2. Carroll wants to prove he can do more than college football and take it to the next levelHe has a 33-31 record as an NFL coach, but he does feel like he has something to prove after so so seasons before that. Obviously alot of college coaches try taking it to the next level..... 3. MoneyJust like Brian Kelly is getting paid more at Notre Dame... Pete Carroll will be making more with the Seahawks. 2 million dollars around to be exact. It shouldn't be for the money overall though.... 4. No support from the athletic director Mike GarrettSince winning the national title in 2004, there has been very little praise from Garrett since. The Reggie Bush story hasn't helped either. He has been criticized for not winning the "small games"

I think it is heavy #3. He'll be getting $7million a year which is a joke. He shouldn't make more than every coach in the league besides Belichick and Shanahan. I'm sure #1 has something to do with it as well since USC is in bad shape. The other two are minor reasons if they are a reason at all.

He openly said #1 is not true... but I feel deep down inside it is #1 and #2. Yes he is being paid alot but I think he got bored of college football and wants a new challenge. He recruits so well... yet doesn't win it all. The BCS sucks to much to him that he can't win? maybe....

Frankly, I think it's a little bit of all except for #4. He knew that USC football would probably get penalized for the Reggie Bush scandal, so he did the exact same thing that Tim Floyd did. Carroll also might be better in the NFL this time around, he's improved his coaching style and I feel can do better in Seattle than he did in New England and New York. But of course, the Seahawks milked out a lot of cash for Carroll to take that job. In sports, money is really all that matters. Sad, but true.

Props to Kirk Ferentz for staying loyal to his job. Alot of times, his name always comes up as the next new coach for some school but at least he's loyal.
Mike Riley has done the right thing staying at Oregon State as he has a contract for life out there.

You guys would be surprised how #4 could be a big reason Carroll leaves. The chemistry wasn't going so well between Garrett and Carroll.

It was about the cash and the scandal. Carroll left at the perfect time as USC football will be hit hard by the NCAA, just like the basketball team. It must really suck being a USC fan these days.
