This is in honor of Thanksgiving... need to edit the links.
2007 Edition
Sorry can't link the 2008 edition yet...
Turkey of the year 2007: Michelle Wie
Turkey of the year 2008: The State of Washington sports (everything combined whether it was the Mariners, Seahawks, Washington Huskies bball and football, Washington State Cougars football and the Seattle Sonics relocating to Oklahoma City)
Turkey of 2009: Read below....
Omar Minaya and the New York Mets:
This is the 3rd straight year I pick on them.... Sure were alot of injuries to blame, but with all the preseason expectations I had for this ball club.. I had alot of crow to eat picking them to win it all. To have such a rotten record at the end of the year is just embarrassing.
Matt Holliday:
No it's not a reference to that one play where he dropped the ball hitting him in the groin... he was a bust in Oakland. He proved that he couldn't hit consistently like he did in Colorado and he's just a Colorado swinging hitter. He's also meant for the National League. Holliday also failed to backup Albert Pujols during the playoffs after Pujols would walk.
LeGarrette Blount:
Sure gave alot of negative publicity in Oregon. Why Reinstate him?
Eric Mangini and the Cleveland Browns:
Sorry but he's created a mess out there. The way they lost to Detroit was hilarious.
The City of Cleveland:
Why are they here? Lebron James made a reference to all the Cleveland mistakes over history and now he can add the Cavs losing in the 2009 Eastern Conference finals to the story of Cleveland losing in sports...the Indians were bad too.
Yankee Stadium:
Too Expensive and way too many home runs in baseball. How can the ball fly so much in this park?
Charlie Weis:
Why not? He said he wasn't hired to go 6-6... but it could happen!!! Also great losing down the stretch.
Alex Rodriguez and Steroids:
Not referring to his performance this season, but the media leaking people on a list of "anonymous" people who took steroids has been leaked. This has gotten way too far.
Bud Selig:
He can't handle the steroid controversy in this era of baseball. He's made baseball an embarrassing sport. I'm a large fan of it and It's been annoying. He also wants no instant replay.
Manny Ramirez:
Suspension did stop some momentum but he sure had a decline after returning from his suspension.
Brett Favre's Offseason part II:
ESPN's coverage of this was ridiculous, but the fact he actually couldn't decide after "retiring" with the Jets was a little dumb. This is the 2nd straight year I put this in here. His "I'm staying retired" quote was just a way to miss training camp. Sneaky move there Brett.
San Jose Sharks in the playoffs:
Yes another bad season of postseason. This is the 4th straight year of disappointment after playing consistent game in the regular season. They didn't show up for 2 of the four losses to the Ducks. Now I know what it feels like to be a top seed losing to an 8 seed.
Ricky Rubio and the Minnesota Timberwolves:
I found the hype with Rubio to be really dumb. He kept getting too much media attention before the draft, only to find out he won't be playing until another two years at minimum. The T-wolves traded up just for this? Ridiculous!
Tom Cable:
That punching situation doesn't help....
Milton Bradley:
He signs a 3 year 30 million dollar contract for this? What an embarrassment. He hit .257 on the year and threw the ball to the fans on accident.
Bob Geren:
Yes I'm going to pick on my manager here but he really is a lame duck manager. He for the most part has no passion in wanting to win. He often put the wrong pitcher in at the wrong time when it came to closing a game out. It set the tone for the rest of the season. At least he took the Texas Rangers out with him winning the season record against them...
Darrell Scott:
This guy eventually transfers somewhere. He was a useless person at Colorado and Rodney Stewart proved to be better. Will UCLA get him? I don't know, but for sure his career is considered a "bust" right now.
Lane Kiffin:
Sorry but he has to be here with all the talking and mouthing during the offseason and during the regular season as well.
Marian Hossa:
You're probably not familiar with this story but I'll try to say it in short words. in 2008, Hossa was the trading deadline pickup for the Penguins. He then played really well in the 2nd half and postseason. He almost extended the Stanley cup Finals against the Red Wings with a last second push. He rejected a fat contract to play for the Penguins and signed with the Detroit Red Wings in a one year deal for less money. He eventually ends up being on the losing side of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for two straight years in a row. The Red Wings weren't the losers of the finals, only Hossa was. The good news for Hossa is that he did get a nice deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Elizabeth Lambert:
This is just unacceptable and Flagarant Why was there no red card early on?
Colorado's coaching situation with Dan Hawkins:
Some of you wonder why he's not fired? It's because they can't! The school would be in debt if they bought out the last three remaining years of his contract. They were dumb enough to give him an extension last year when they started 3-2 and now they must pay the price for 3 more seasons....
Turkey play of the year:
Luis Castillo Dropping a should be game-ending catch.
Honorable Mention:
Dre Bly catching a should be pick 6 but is instead a fumble due to a taunt.
Turkey play-call by coach of the year:
Les Miles's timeout calling
Turkey Prediction of the year:
Lou Holtz's Notre Dame Preseason pick
Sports Illustrated also jinxed the NY Mets and I did as well in a video. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Turkey Referee/Umpire calls of the year:
- The Angels-Yankee game where the Angels infielder tagged both Yankees out. (Sorry couldn't find a clip of it...)
- Also the handball by the French which sent them to the world cup. Ireland will be crying for awhile after this one.
Honorable mention: SEC refs
This year's Turkey of the year is:
Jamarcus Russell:
Of course I must put him here. You're probably thinking "Where's the whole Raider team?"... Well, the defense isn't trash. Sure our stats don't look good but they are playing on short rest. Some of you haters who keep saying we're trash... we're not complete. Russell's inability to throw the ball properly during some points of the season is an embarrassment. For some reason he's regressed so far and is showing no signs of improvement.
Any Suggestions? Please let me know what I missed. Also who is your turkey of the year?
